Royston succumbed to the classic smash and grab raid as Redditch left Garden Walk with the three points.
In a competitive game, which cried out for some real quality, Redditch snatched the points with practically the last kick of the game. Indecision in the home defence was capitalised on by Shaquille Leachman-Whittingham, who raced clear and slotted the ball into the corner, beyond Joe Welch’s despairing dive.
The game had been a keenly contested affair, with both defences on top chances were few and far between. Welch saved well towards the end of the first half when Danico Johnson worked a sight of goal but other than this the Redditch forwards were kept quiet.
For Royston it was Tom Knowles who carried the main attacking threat. He was unlucky to see a well struck left foot volley rebound off the crossbar in the early stages of the second half.
Royston upped the pressure as the 90 minute mark approached. A Knowles free kick was driven wide, before away goalkeeper Adam Whitehouse was forced into his only meaningful save, getting down low to repel another Knowles strike that was destined for the corner.
With Royston pressing, it was ultimately Redditch who had the decisive say, as Leachman-Whittingham struck the winner to help Redditch ease clear of the relegation zone and bring to and end Royston’s four game winning streak.
