Royston Town Ladies v Leverstock Green Ladies |
Competition | Eastern Region Women's Football League: Division One South |
Result | Won 3-2 |
Royston Scorers | Probert(2), Buchanan |
It was only last Sunday that Town staged a late recovery to draw 3-3 with Leverstock but in the return game at Garden Walk they went one better by running out winners 3-2.
The hosts got off to the perfect start after only 2 minutes when a great ball out of defence by skipper Gemma Barlow put Jenny Probert clear who finished clinically. It got even better after 15 minutes when after a great interchange of passing started by Leanne Buchanan and Probert raced clear to score her second.
Leverstock slowly recovered from Town’s whirlwind start and from a free kick on the edge of box, start in keeper Eve Brindle was unfortunate to push the ball into her own net.
Town immediately went on the attack and Stacey Hassan went close when Probert played her strike partner in on goal. With half time approaching Buchanan chased down a ball which seemed certain to go and of play but managed to go round the advancing keeper and scored from the tightest of angles. It could have been 4 just before the break when Amy Shepherd got into a great position but her shot went wide.
Leverstock started the second half with much more determination and it took some great defending but Town’s back four of Barlow, Webster, Miller and Mardell to stem the flow. However, the visitors managed to pull one back with 20 minutes to go and it took a great tip onto the bar by Brindle to prevent them equalising shortly afterwards. The last 10 minutes saw Town resisting more pressure from the visitors whilst at the same time playing on the break which saw chances go begging for both Hassan and Probert.
At the end of game Town’s Manager Steve Buchanan commented “It was a bit nerve-wracking towards the end but I thought our overall team spirit and determination was superb and we were well worth the 3 points”.
