Sunday 2 October saw us travel to table topping Potton, in a fixture that had everything that is both good and bad in youth football. Both teams showed passion and commitment on the pitch, with some strong challenges and neither side being able to keep possession for any length of time. Then a long punt up field from Potton, resulted in a corner, the ball seemed to be lost in the trees behind the goal, when it was eventually found the ref was unhappy with the pressure in the ball, this led to more time stood waiting. Finally the kick was taken we seemed not to have switched on as it was floated in Potton reacted quickest and found the back of the net.
That only served to wake us and at last we started to play, knocking the ball around neatly & working for each other, we began to make chances with Mason, Connor S and Charlie all going close. Kye and Gareth began to dominate the centre of the park, Jack and partner Connor L started to win the long balls played by Potton to their forwards. As pressure grew, you could sense the home crowd getting restless (in 3 previous matches they had scored a total of 21 goals).
However we were fortunate not to concede again, a long racking ball played across to the Potton right flank saw the winger just offside the ref unaware of this let play continue, the ball was crossed in and finished neatly. The goal stood lucky the linesman had spotted the injustice and held his flag aloft.
As half time approached we pressed again in search of the equaliser and we would not be disappointed, a neat interchange of passing saw Charlie released mid way in the Potton half still with the fullback to beat he showed strength to hold him off found a bit of space and unleashed a spectacular drive that left even the opposition manager applauding.
After the restart it was much the same, we pressed forward in search of more goals but were cautious not to over commit.
More and more of the game was played in their half, as pressure mounted we won a corner, Kye strode up placed the ball and delivered a lovely cross that swung in towards the keeper and his crowded 6 yard box, he flapped at the ball only to see it sail past him high into the roof of the net.
As the game restarted we were guilty of over celebrating and not switching on and if it were not for Ellis in goal it would have been 2-2 as he pulled of a fine finger tip save from a powerful shot.
Conclusion
Potton Colts will be one of the teams at the top end of the table, and you should be pleased with how you approached the match, attitudes were on the whole very good and a team sprit and camaraderie is starting to show. Technical ability you all have but now you have added to that with a will to win and to help your team mate out if he is struggling. This was highlighted near the end of the game when Connor S was helping out Matt at right back, clearing the danger then setting off up the opposite end of the field to support Charlie. Also many players had to play out of position, no-one grumbled about this they all just got on with the job and produced some of the best displays so far.
Keep up the hard work in training lads and many more wins will be coming your way.
