CLUB STATEMENT: DANNY TYLER

In Memory of Danny Tyler

It is with profound sadness that we learned of the passing of Danny Tyler, one of Royston Town FC’s all-time greats, at the age of 76. After a decade-long battle with dementia, bravely faced with the support of his beloved Eileen and friends, his health rapidly deteriorated following a recent brain tumor diagnosis. He peacefully passed away last Friday afternoon at St George’s nursing home.

Danny arrived at Royston in the 1976/77 season under the management of Tommy Everitt and Terry Craddock, leading the side to the Herts. County Premier League title with his prolific goal-scoring. The following season, his partnership with Graham Tibbles yielded a remarkable 73 goals, propelling the Crows to the South Midlands Division 1 Championship.

Beyond his first-team exploits, Danny became a cornerstone of the Reserves in the early 1980s. Under the management of John Halliwell and John Smith, he captained the side to the Herts. Intermediate Cup victory in 1988/89. Like many of his era, Danny seamlessly transitioned to the Royston Town Vets, where he swapped his “poacher” role for a more defensive stance as a centre-half. He and Terry Gore not only managed the Vets, organising fixtures but also became renowned for their legendary end-of-season social events.

Throughout his career, Danny maintained a deep passion for the club’s success. The 2006/07 relegation to South Midlands Division 1 deeply troubled him, prompting him to join the Management Committee to help steer the club back on track. He even served as interim first-team manager before Paul Attfield’s appointment, achieving a perfect winning record in his brief tenure – played two, won two!!

As a player, Danny embodied the classic centre-forward archetype. His physical presence, aerial prowess, and on-field skill were matched by his intimidating presence and witty banter, often unsettling opponents both on and off the pitch. In the dressing room and the bar his lively personality and endless stories were legendary.

Last weekend, countless stories of Danny were shared in the clubhouse and around the ground by those who knew him. My own recollection involves our shared struggles during the gruelling pre-season runs across the Heath. We’d often fall behind the main group, engaging in leisurely conversation and strategically rejoining the pack just as they returned.

In recognition of Danny’s invaluable contributions as both a player and a dedicated clubman, a minute’s silence will be observed before the game against AFC Sudbury on Saturday, 28th December.

On behalf of the club and as a friend, I offer sincere condolences to Eileen and all his family and friends. Danny Tyler will be deeply missed by many.

RIP Danny Tyler
