“We Dug In”

Our first win in the Southern League Premier against fellow promoted Farnborough.

Very pleasing in as much that in my opinion they will be up amongst the front runners in this League so to take all three points was extremely satisfying.

I’ll be the first to admit that the game wasn’t blessed with great quality but we dug in and showed a solid display which saw us through.

Not too many teams will come to Farnborough and come away with maximum points so to do so was a great result.

We changed things up, a little unfortunate for the boys left out but we wanted to go back to our favoured three up top because information we received was a 3-5-2 formation and we wanted to counteract this.

As with some plans it didn’t quite work as we thought, they started with a 4-4-2 diamond but we stuck with our game plan of having our wide men high and wide and to a degree it worked.

I believe with tactics and formations, it’s a case of who holds nerve longest. All formations have strengths and weaknesses and how our game effects the opposition hopefully outweighs their influence on the match.

We will and can play more flowing football but we have to contend with what’s in front of us first and then influence the play more.

Hopefully with more positive results we will slowly “Settle down” and play like we know we can but what pleased me the most was that we competed against a strong physical team and matched them.

The squad is full of quality, we have at times during pre-season played some outstanding football but have not competed as well as we could. To get the balance is what we are after and as said with the confidence of positive results it will come.

Cheers
