Royston produced one of their better performances of late in an entertaining victory on Tuesday evening. The rain prior to kick off had made the pitch slick and the ball was knocked around with great pace by both teams throughout the game.
On the evening The Crows had the more cutting edge in the final third and some good intense determination in their collective work rate. For the first time this season Matt Standen and Dalton OBrien were paired in attack and both were a constant threat to the Hillingdon defence. Recent signing Joe Clemo had a decent run out on the right wing and some concentrated and grafted defensive play gave the home side a second clean sheet in 4 days.
Royston had much the better of the first half, attacking from the first whistle. In just the third minute Tom Malins met a good Joe Clemo cross but hit the post from eight yards.
The opening goal was not long in coming. On 15 minutes Jack Bradshaw did well to chase what looked to be a lost cause but after keeping the ball in play a second attempt at a cross was handled with Dalton O'Brien coverting the penalty. Both teams created half chances for the remainder of the half until just before half time when Royston grabbed a quick fire double.
Hillingdon were undone in unfortunate circumstances when a ball forward from the defence hit the referee and whilst unorganised and unsuspecting the quick through ball sent O'Brien away and his shot with vendom found the net past the exposed keeper.
Just moments later Matt Standen did well to intercept an underhit back pass from the fullback and after he rounded the keeper rolled the ball into the empty net from a tight angle.
Standen should have really added another before the interval when another good right wing cross found him unmarked eight yards out but he couldn't get enough of a connection to divert it goalwards.
Royston continued to look threatening in the second half with the keeper making good saves from John Bitting and O'Brien. A Tom Malins corner was kept out by a combination of keeper's hand and crossbar and from another corner John McGrandles had a fierce header superbly tipped over. Dalton O'Brien completed a well deserved hat trick when he raced onto Ricky Young's pass to clip a shot over the keeper from 12 yards.
Lewis Endacott should have had another penalty when he was hauled down in the area but the award of an inexpicable yellow card for The Crow's full back for a supposed dive was quite shocking.
At the other end Hillingdon offered some great football to the spectacle but lacked a cutting edge on the evening their best chance coming when they did have the ball in the net late on but the referee deemed a foul on Endacott in the build up and the effort was ruled out
Royston's reward is a home quarter final against either AFC Dunstable or Hertford Town
