Royston Town put five goals by bottom placed team Woodford United without really hitting top gear. The visitors arrived without a point to their name from twelve games and having only scored three goals, whilst conceding thirty-four so on paper the high flying Crows could have perceived this win to have been a foregone conclusion.
Duncan Easley urged his players not to be complacent and to their credit they set about their business in a determined fashion. Early eagerness brought early chances and the scoring was opened in the 13th minute with Matt Standen striking home a sweet volley through the Woodford’s keeper’s legs from a Lee Wilson back post cross. The second goal came ten minutes later after continued home team pressure when another Wilson cross to the near post was hastily slashed at by the Woodford skipper, Chris Jackson, only to see his miskick find the top of his own net.
The visitors worked hard to try and gain some foothold in the game but never really troubled Will Norris in the Royston goal and their only efforts came from long range shots that missed the target. The Crows added a third right on half time as a Tom Malins cross eluded the Woodford defence landing at the feet of Sam Spencer who controlled well and shot accurately into the bottom corner.
The second half again saw the Crows totally in command with Jack Bradshaw marshalling the home defence superbly leaving Norris only called upon to deal with a few crosses. Two quick fire goals on 58 and 60 minutes put the game way beyond the visitors. The first saw skipper Ross Collins’ side-foot shot nestle in the net following a set up pass by Kaan Fehmi and two minutes later Fehmi himself made it five latching onto his own half cleared corner kick to plant a superb shot into the far top corner for the goal of the game.
Royston made a triple substitution on 65 minutes giving Johnny Butler, Carl Edwards and Luke Robins a run out for Joe DeLaSalle, Spencer and man of the match Fehmi and the home side kept pressure on the Woodford goal but could not increase their already game winning lead.
Team: Norris, Parr, Wilson, Bradshaw, DeLaSalle (Butler-65), Spencer (Edwards-65), Collins (c), Standen, Fehmi (Robins-65) Lockett, Malins.
