Town Vets continued their successful defence of the Cambs Veterans Invitation Cup with another convincing victory to top their league with three wins in three.
Following the Christmas break, Town struggled in the first 20 minutes to get their passing game in gear and the plucky visitors frustrated their best efforts until Sean Henry put Nick Humphreys clear down the left and his cross was converted by Carlo Silenti to open the scoring for Town. Peter Leete increased the lead with a header but almost immediately after, indecision in Town's defence gave the opposition a chance in the 18 yard area and Referee Martin Pope penalised a rash tackle by Geoff Pinner with a penalty kick that was converted by Newport to reduce the deficit. Town then extended their lead again with the goal of the game from Leete when he lashed in a right-foot volley into the roof of the net to give the 'keeper no chance. Town then added two more goals with defender Matt McQueen scoring both from close range following pinpoint corner kicks from Humphreys. Leete made it 6-1 before half time with his hat-trick goal when the visitors failed to clear a loose ball in the 6-yard box.
Team manager Terry Gore made changes at half time including a debut for Paddy Coughlin at left back.
The game meandered for the first 25 minutes of the second half with much of the play in the midfield and Town unable to rediscover their cutting edge of the first half. The deadlock was broken when Town were awarded a penalty for a foul and Paul Lewis duly scored with the resultant penalty kick. Leete then scored with a header to complete the scoring at 8-1 and notch his fourth of the game.
