The new season began in earnest for Step 3 Royston Town with a Emirates FA Cup Preliminary Round tie against Thurlow Nunn Premier Division Step 5 club Newmarket Town.
The Crows, despite a few minor injuries, fielded a strong line-up against the Jockeys, who themselves had issues with injured or suspended players. Jonny Edwards was the star of the show netting four times in this dominant Royston performance.
The scoring opened after just 2 minutes with Edwards scoring with a nice volley – but despite constant Royston pressure and possibly trying to force the play too much – it took until the 44th minute for Edwards to double the home team advantage with a simple finish following some good work by lively winger Josh Castiglione.
The Crows came out a little bit more relaxed in the second half and went about their business in a more controlled and effective fashion.
The third goal came in the 65th minute with Edwards completing his hat-trick powering in from a tight angle giving Jockeys’ keeper Alex Archer no chance.
The home team made in four when Adam Watkins drove forward and set up Spyros Mentis on the edge of the penalty area who curled a nice effort away from the diving Archer.
The fifth goal came from some good play by substitute Isaac Galliford who put the ball through to Edwards to shoot in for his fourth of the game in the 83rd minute.
The sixth and final goal in the 85th minute saw Galliford complete an impressive cameo with a good turn and forceful left foot drive to seal the game for the impressive Crows.
