A dominant performance from the Crows saw them lift arguably the biggest prize in the club’s long history, as they defeated Taunton Town 5-0 in the League Cup final second leg, to give them an overall aggregate victory of 7-0.
What was not arguable however was the size of the crowd, as 1335 people packed into Garden Walk to cheer the Crows home and record the largest attendance ever seen, beating the previous record when Maldon & Tiptree were the visitors in the FA Cup.
The hard work had been done in the first leg the previous week, and this was acknowledged by the away side who fielded a much-changed, more youthful side, that was no match for the rampant home side.
Royston started the game at a break-neck pace and could have scored on 3 or 4 occasions before the opening goal arrived in the 24th minute. A long diagonal ball from Carl Mensah was headed down by Matt Bateman and Brandon Adams was on hand to finish low into the corner.
The home side completely bossed the first half with Taunton struggling to get out of their own half, and it was no surprise when the second goal arrived in the 42nd minute, as Matt Bateman rose to head home a pinpoint Ronnie Henry cross.
The second half followed the same vein, although Royston played more sideways than forwards, looking content to hold onto their considerable advantage. With the bench demanding a more positive attitude on the ball, the players responded and were rewarded with 3 further goals to give the scoreline a truer reflection of the difference between the two sides.
Devonte Aransibia capped an impressive all-round performance with 2 goals, both close-range finishes in the penalty area, after the away defence had struggled to deal with crosses firstly from Spyros Mentis and then James Brighton. The final goal arrived in the 83rd minute as substitute Tom Newman’s 30-yard free-kick found its way into the bottom corner of the net.
The final whistle followed shortly afterwards, to cue the start of wild celebrations, as the crowd surged onto the pitch to share the moment with the players. The scenes continued into the night and capped a memorable evening for everyone involved with the club.
